CHAPTER 3
The
weekend stretched out before her, long and anxious. Ese had been looking at the
time all through, she couldn't shake the feeling of unease. There was so much
on her mind, Jane had the promise to hook her up with a young man that can take
care of her financial problems. Every time She tried to relax, her thoughts
kept returning to the endless list of possibilities and disappointments. She
tried to distract herself with TV and her favorite book ‘The king and I by
Diamond Alpha', but nothing seemed to hold her attention for long. She tried to
reassure herself that everything would be fine, but the worry gnawed at her,
stealing her peace of mind.
Monday
finally came and Ese made her way to Jane's luxurious home at Durban street,
off Ademola Adetokunbo Wuse II. Abuja, as instructed.
She
was overwhelmed by the opulence of it all and couldn't help but feel a twinge
of envy. Jane welcomed her warmly and offered her a seat in the living room.
She then went to the kitchen to get Ese some orange juice. As Ese sipped her
drink, Jane told her about Rich Lawal, a man she was planning to introduce Ese
to. Ese listened attentively, her nerves mounting with each passing minute. She
had no idea what to expect and the uncertainty was unsettling. But she trusted
Jane and knew that she had her best interests at heart. So, when Jane told her
that Lawal was a successful businessman who was looking for someone to take
care of, Ese nodded along, even though she had no idea what that meant. She
just hoped that this was the solution to her financial problems and that it
wouldn't come at too high a cost.
As
Jane continued to talk about Rich Lawal, Ese couldn't help but feel a mix of
excitement and trepidation. She had no idea what to expect and the uncertainty
was unsettling. But she knew that she had to take this opportunity if she
wanted to solve her financial problems and continue her education. So, when
Jane told her to be smart and not let her down, Ese nodded in agreement,
determined to do whatever it took to make this work. Jane seemed satisfied with
her response and went into her bedroom, returning a moment later with a
brand-new iPhone X device. She handed it to Ese along with ₦10,000 for her
to buy a sim card and transport herself back home. Ese was so grateful and
thanked Jane profusely for her kindness. Jane waved off her thanks and took out
a pen and paper to write down Rich Lawal's phone number and handed it over to
Ese. She told Ese to use the phone for communication and to call Lawal that
evening, introducing herself as Ese, a friend of Jane's. She warned Ese that
Lawal was not a patient man and that it was important to follow through on her
promise to call. Ese nodded, stood up, and thanked Jane again before leaving
her house to get a sim card. She was determined to make the most of this
opportunity and do everything she could to succeed.
After
purchasing a sim card from a local vendor at Wuse market, Ese took a cab back
home, which she booked for ₦4000. She wasn't bothered by the cost, as she was
scared of being robbed while holding such an expensive phone. A cab seemed like
the safer option, she taught. On her way home, Ese couldn't stop thinking about
how happy she was to finally own an iPhone, and not just any iPhone, but the
latest model. She quickly read through the phone manual and placed her sim card
into the device, hoping that there would be light when she got home so she
could charge it. Ese was so excited to start using her new phone and to call
Rich Lawal as promised. She knew that this was a huge opportunity and she was
determined to make the most of it. As the cab pulled up to her house, Ese
couldn't wait to get inside and start her new journey. She paid the driver and
stepped out of the car, looking forward to what the future held.
