CHAPTER 4
It
was a cold, tired evening in the city of Abuja. The wind was howling outside,
whipping up the fallen leaves and sending them skittering across the ground.
Inside, the atmosphere was just as bleak. Ese couldn't shake the feeling of
discomfort as she waited for Rich Lawal's driver to arrive. She trusted Jane
and knew that she would never lead her into harm's way, but she couldn't help
feeling uneasy about the whole arrangement. She had never met Lawal and had no
idea what to expect. But she knew that she had to do what she had to do.
Her
mother was sick and needed medical attention that Ese couldn't provide on her
own. She had to find a way to pay for her tuition fees and this seemed like the
only option. With a heavy heart, she walked to the junction to wait for the
driver along airport road, Ese waited for the driver to arrive, praying that
everything would turn out alright. She knew that she had to be strong and that
she couldn't let her fear hold her back. Jane was right – she had to do what
she had to do, no matter how uncomfortable it made her feel.
Ese
sat in the back of an official car, feeling strange and out of place. She had
never been in a car like this before and the luxurious surroundings were
overwhelming. She looked out the window at the passing scenery, her mind racing
with thoughts of what the future held. Just a few days ago, she had been
struggling to come up with the money for her tuition fees and now, here she
was, being chauffeured around by a man she had never even met.
Ese
had called Lawal that Monday evening as promised, but he had just ended the
call, telling her he would call back an hour later. When he did, he told Ese
that he would love to host her over the next weekend and asked her to text her
address to him. He said that he would send his driver to come to pick her up by
8:00 pm on Friday. Ese had done as she was told, still trying to wrap her head
around everything that was happening. She knew that this was a huge
opportunity, but she couldn't help feeling a little scared and uncertain. All
she could do was hope for the best and see where this journey took her.
As
the driver navigated through the streets of Abuja, Ese couldn't help but feel a
sense of excitement and wonder. She had never been to the Maitama District
before and was fascinated by the luxurious surroundings. Maitama was located in
the North-East region of Phase 1 in the Abuja Municipality and was known for
its large, expensive residential properties. Ese had always heard about the
neighborhood's reputation for affluence, but seeing it in person was a whole
other experience. The houses were grand and well-maintained, and the streets
were clean and quiet. It was clear that Maitama was a serene, affluent
neighborhood that offered an excellent quality of life. As such, the cost of
living in the area was extremely high and Ese couldn't help but feel a little
intimidated. She had never known such luxury and wasn't sure if she would ever
get used to it.
